Coal: A Love Story News Project

I am part of a group of 11 students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who are working on a multimedia news site, poweringanation.org. This year we are working on a Powering a Nation Special Report, Coal: A Love Story, which will launch at the end of July, 2011. We have reporters out in Powder River Basin and Appalachia investigating and shooting stories that explore our relationship with coal.

In Appalachia, our reporters have found that not only is coal literally all around you but it is also very much intertwined in the culture and daily lives of the people living there. How would the culture of the area change if coal were no longer part of the state economy, or just not as dominant?

We do have a blog that follows the process of developing, creating and editing Coal: A Love Story http://poweringanation.org/index.php/powering-a-nation-blog.html
