I am currently a post-doctoral fellow under the guidance of GiorgioBertorelle (Università di Ferrara, Laboratorio di Genetica di Popolazioni, della Conservazione, ed Evoluzionistica) and Oscar Gaggiotti (Université Joseph Fourier, Laboratoire d'Ecologie Alpine). The three of us are thinking about new ways of analyzing and interpreting population genetic data from rare and endangered species, as well as the challenges of practical application of genetic data in real world conservation and restoration projects. We are working with ConGRESS (Conservation of Genetic Resources for Effective Species Survival), an online repository of data, resources and tools to help connect conservation genetic scientists and conservation practitioners such as managers and policy makers. This project is a large scale collaboration between 13 institutions in 10 countries, funded by the European Union's FP7 Program, as described briefly here. The aspect of the project that Oscar, Giorgio and I are working on is creation of a software pipeline to facilitate the use of simulations in planning a conservation genetic study. This project is in line with my research interests on population dynamics (demographic and genetic), particularly those in small, bottlenecked populations. I am also interested in range-edge effects, hybridization with introduced species, dispersal, and local adaptation.
